What Is a Brass Gallery Rail?

A brass gallery rail (also known as a shelf rail, brass tipping rail or fiddle rail) is a low brass railing mounted along the edge of a shelf. It provides an aesthetic finishing touch while preventing objects on bookshelves, kitchen shelves, or bar counters from falling. It mounts easily on solid wood, marble, and glass shelves — all necessary mounting screws are included.

Every post in this brass gallery rail system is fully compatible with our solid brass rods, so you can extend or reconfigure your shelf rail at any time.

Understanding the Posts

End Post — Used at the end of a run, single hole
Corner Post — 90-degree corner, used to return the rail along the depth of the shelf
Through Post — Rod runs straight through, used for spacing or joining two rods together

We don't recommend spacing posts more than 10"-12" (25-30cm) apart. If the rail runs along the front of your shelving, use end posts at each end and through posts every 8"-14". If it runs along the front and sides, use corner posts and end posts.

Choosing Your Rod Length

Order rods between 6" (15.2cm) and 36" (91cm) depending on your shelf size. Rods should be about 2" (5cm) smaller than your shelf measurement. Brass is a soft metal and can be easily cut with a hacksaw — sand the cut ends for a smooth fit. Join two rods using a Through Post for sizes larger than 38".

Example: What to Order

For an 80cm x 20cm open shelf:

2x End Post, 2x Corner Post, 2x Through Post
1x 30" (76cm) Rod, 2x 6" (15.2cm) Rod

For a 70cm closed shelf:

2x End Post, 1x Through Post, 1x 26" (66cm) Rod

Installation

All posts feature top connecting elements and assemble easily with a screwdriver. For glass or marble surfaces, attach using adhesive or silicone.

Brass Gallery Rail FAQ

Is a gallery rail the same as a shelf rail or tipping rail?

Yes. Gallery rail, shelf rail, tipping rail and fiddle rail all describe the same thing: a low rail along the edge of a shelf that keeps items from tipping or sliding off. Ours is made from solid brass.

Is this brass rail lacquered?

No. It is unlacquered solid brass, so it develops a natural patina over time. Polish it with any brass cleaner to bring back the bright gold shine.

Can I cut the brass rods to size?

Yes. Brass is soft and cuts easily with a hacksaw or pipe cutter. Order a rod about 2" (5cm) shorter than your shelf, or join two rods with a Through Post for runs longer than 38".

Can I install it on glass or marble shelves?

Yes. Use the included brass screws on wood shelves, or a strong adhesive or silicone on glass and marble.
